A Jewel of Hispanics art, the Mezquita, with its 850 columns, double arches and Byzantine mosaics, is a legacy of the Umayyad Caliphate in Spain. In the center of its forest of columns rises a 16th-century cathedral.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/infocordoba.com\/?page_id=46\" title=\"[read more about Mosque of Cordoba.]\">[read more about Mosque of Cordoba.]<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Alcazar de los Reyes Cristianos (*)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Alcazar palace was built in the 13th century by King Alfonso XI, and until the late 15th century, the kings of Spain used the Alcazar as a royal residence. The palace has two courtyards and Arab baths.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On display in the Inquisition Tower are impressive 2ndC Roman mosaics-discovered in Corredera Square-and a 3rdC Roman sarcophagus carved from one piece of marble.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The renaissance gardens, refreshed by abundant fountains and pools, are in Arab style. Statues of the kings of Spain are contemporary.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/infocordoba.com\/?page_id=61\" title=\"\">[read more about Alcazar of Cordoba]<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Jewish Quarter (**)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Jewish Quarter is the best-known part of Cordoba&#8217;s historic centre, which was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1984 and is one of the largest in Europe. To the northwest of the Mosque-Cathedral along the city wall, its medieval streets have a distinctly Moorish flair to them, reminiscent of the Jews&#8217; prosperity under the Caliphate of Cordoba. This neighborhood&#8217;s history is a history of the Caliphate and of the West. Of special interest are the Synagogue and Souk. <a href=\"https:\/\/infocordoba.com\/?page_id=68\" title=\"\">[read more about the Jewish Quarters in Cordoba.]<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Roman Temple<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Next to the City Hall are some of the columns, the foundation and altar of Cordoba&#8217;s Roman temple, probably dedicated to the Emperor Augustus [<a href=\"https:\/\/infocordoba.com\/spain\/andalusia\/cordoba\/info\/roman\/cordoba_roman_temple.htm\">read more about Roman temple&nbsp;<\/a>]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Medina Azahara (Medinat al-Zahra)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ancient capital of Al-Andalus at the height of the Umayyad Caliphate&#8217;s power,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/infocordoba.com\/spain\/andalusia\/cordoba\/medina_azahara.htm\">Medina Azahara (Medinat al-Zahra)<\/a>&nbsp;was built 11 km west of Cordoba beginning in about 941. Today 10% of the city has been excavated, including Abd al-Rahman III&#8217;s palace, and the large archaeological site makes a great excursion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Other Monuments and Sights<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/infocordoba.com\/spain\/andalusia\/cordoba\/info\/center\/puerta_de_almodovar.htm\">Almodovar Gate (Puerta de Almodovar)<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/infocordoba.com\/spain\/andalusia\/cordoba\/info\/center\/puerta_del_puente.htm\">Bridge Gate (Puerta del Puente)<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/infocordoba.com\/spain\/andalusia\/cordoba\/info\/mosque\/callejita_de_las_flores_bell_tower.htm\">Callejita de las Flores Street<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/infocordoba.com\/spain\/andalusia\/cordoba\/city_walls.htm\">Cordoba City walls<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/infocordoba.com\/spain\/andalusia\/cordoba\/info\/center\/palacio_congresos_cordoba.htm\">Hospital de San Sebastian<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/infocordoba.com\/spain\/andalusia\/cordoba\/info\/mosque\/mosque_bell_tower.htm\">Mezquita Bell Tower<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/infocordoba.com\/spain\/andalusia\/cordoba\/info\/center\/puerta_del_portillo.htm\">Portillo Gate (Puerta del Portillo)<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/infocordoba.com\/spain\/andalusia\/cordoba\/info\/center\/triumfo_de_san_rafael.htm\">Saint Raphael&#8217;s Triumph Devotional Column (Triunfo de San Rafael)<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/infocordoba.com\/spain\/andalusia\/cordoba\/info\/jewry\/zoco_patio.htm\">Souk (Zoco)<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/infocordoba.com\/spain\/andalusia\/cordoba\/photos\/jewish_quarter\/pages\/DSCN1525-tony_jpg.htm\">Synagogue (Sinagoga)<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Museums<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Archeological Museum(*)<\/strong>&nbsp;is situated in a renaissance palace, over the ruins of the Roman Theatre, and features prehistoric, Iberian, Roman, Visigoth, Moslem and renaissance artifacts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Julio Romero de Torres Museum(*)<\/strong>&nbsp;is dedicated exclusively to Cordoba&#8217;s most emblematic painter, who captured the beauty of Cordoba&#8217;s women in his portraits. Across the courtyard is the&nbsp;<strong>Fine Arts Museum<\/strong>&nbsp;(Museo de Bellas Artes), situated in a 16th century hospital and exhibiting a collection of paintings and sculptures, including some by Goya, Zurbar\u00e1n, Murillo, and Sorolla.
